Microsoft Secures Stargate Norway GPU Deal After OpenAI Exit
Microsoft has expanded its AI infrastructure footprint by acquiring a 30,000 Nvidia GPU allocation at Norway's Stargate data center, filling a void left by OpenAI's withdrawn commitment. The five-year agreement with UK-based Nscale begins in 2026, leveraging renewable energy for what could grow to 100,000 GPUs.
The move continues Microsoft's pattern of absorbing compute capacity originally earmarked for OpenAI, including a Texas facility previously tied to the ChatGPT maker. Meanwhile, OpenAI has slashed its projected infrastructure spending from $1.4 trillion to $600 billion through 2030, pivoting toward leased capacity over owned assets.
